Medical Arrangements during the 2009 Games
Organisation
Mats Danielsson is in charge of all medical services for the NatWest Island Games 2009. Mats played in the Åland football team at the 1989 Games and has been Team Åland's leading physiotherapist at 7 other Island Games. A qualified and dedicated person in charge of specific medical requirements for each individual sport will support Mats up to and during the Games. This person will even act as a contact for any relevant questions.
The main centre for medical treatment will be Medimar, which is situated at Torggatan 10 in the middle of Games Street. This medical centre, which is home to GPs, nurses and physiotherapists, will cater for minor injuries and general health problems. It will be possible for visiting islands own medical staff to use the centre's treatment rooms.
Serious injuries and emergencies will be treated at Ålands Centralsjukhus (General Hospital). Dental care will be provided at the Dental Center at Nygatan 7 just off Games Street.
The cost of treatment at any of the above has not yet been finanlised.
First Aid
Finland's Red Cross will in co-operation with the OC organise courses in general first aid and specific sports injuries. On completion of these courses groups will be formed and stationed at venues as required.
During the Opening and Closing Ceremonies Red Cross groups will be in attendance.
Medical Prescriptions
All medical prescriptions issued in Scandinavia are valid on Åland. Medimar medical centre will assist in converting medical prescriptions issued on all other islands.Doping
During the Games representatives of the Swedish Anti-doping Committee will conduct doping tests. The samples will be tested at the WADA approved laboratory in the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. All competitors are eligible for testing. Irrespective of sport all samples will be taken at Medimar.
WADA's homepage http:www.wada-ama.org contains information about forbidden substances and doping methods. All competitors and leaders are advised to consult the lists and information provided by WADA to insure that no forbidden medicines or such are used. Information and instructions about seeking dispensation from the rules for medical reasons can be found on the WADA site.
