Eckeröhallen, which is Åland´s largest indoor sports-hall, is situated on the west of the island 30 minutes by car from Mariehamn. The hall cover an area of 11,300 m² including a full-size football pitch. Eckeröhallen has changing rooms, laundry facilities, treatment rooms and facilities for officials. There is a café and an extensive parking area. This venue is suitable for almost all indoor sports.

There are no basketball traditions on Åland but the Swedish and Finnish basketball associations regularly hold training camps on the island. 

The basketball competition will be jointly organised by representatives from some of the top Swedish clubs and the Finnish Basketball Association.

Hopefully the inclusion of basketball in the NatWest Island Games 2009 will stimulate local interest for the sport and encourage future development.
