Åland has about 1000 licensed players who compete in leagues in Sweden and in Finland. There are 8 senior men's teams including IFK Mariehamn and 3 women's teams of which Åland United plays in the women's Premier League. Åland is home to referees at Premiership level in women's and men's football, a FIFA referee and two UEFA assessors.

35 football competitions are arranged annually on Åland by the local clubs and in 2006 Åland's Football Association hosted a qualification round for the European U-17 Championships.

Venue: various football grounds

In addition to the main ground, Wiklöf Holding Arena, matches will be played in Lemland, Sund, Jomala, Finström, Hammarland, Saltvik and Eckerö. These grounds are within 10–30 minutes by car from Mariehamn.
